A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND RECOGNIZING THE DIABETES FOUNDATION OF MISSISSIPPI FOR ITS SERVICE EFFORTS TO DIABETIC PERSONS THROUGHOUT THE STATE.

WHEREAS, more than 240,000 Mississippians have diabetes, an incurable disease that impairs the body's ability to convert dietary sugar into energy; and

WHEREAS, 80,000 Mississippians don't know they have diabetes and another 800,000 are at high risk for developing the disease due to lifestyle, obesity and family history; and

WHEREAS, diabetes cost the state $1.5 Billion in direct and indirect cost; and

WHEREAS, although diabetes is an incurable disease, the symptoms of the disease can be controlled by various means, such as diet, exercise and medications, especially if discovered in early stages; and

WHEREAS, in an effort to identify the undiagnosed before developing one or more of the serious complications caused by diabetes including blindness, heart and kidney disease, strokes and amputations, the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi will increase community awareness through free screenings, health fairs and public awareness screenings at corporate locations and a screening at the Mississippi State Capitol on March 25, 1999:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MISSISSIPPI STATE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and thank the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi for its efforts in fighting diabetes by increasing public awareness through screenings and health fairs and for its other service efforts to diabetic persons throughout the State of Mississippi.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be forwarded to the President of the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi and to the Capitol Press Corps.
